A Night of Mexican Splendor:
Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández and the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl
The Hollywood Bowl Summer Concert Series 2024 brought a vibrant splash of Mexican culture
to Los Angeles with a spectacular performance by the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia
Hernández, accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Carlos Miguel
Prieto. The evening was a mesmerizing display of colorful costumes, diverse dances, and a rich
tapestry of Mexican folklore, delighting an enthusiastic audience.
The concert opened with newer compositions that brought fresh energy to the stage. Juan Pablo
Contreras’ “Mariachitlán”; and Gabriela Ortiz’s “Antropolis”; were met with rousing applause,
showcasing the evolving landscape of Mexican classical music. However, it was the second half
of the program that truly resonated with lovers of traditional Mexican folklore.
The Philharmonic, guided by Prieto’s expert direction and insightful introductions, brought the
rhythms of Mexico to life. The selection of Danzones, including a piece by the legendary
Agustín Lara, set the tone for an unforgettable experience. The highlight was undoubtedly José
Pablo Moncayo’s beloved “Huapango”; which served as the perfect canvas for the Ballet
Folklórico’s dazzling display of dances and costumes, complete with a spirited Mariachi performance.
The program also featured a danzón by Arturo Márquez and a piece by Silvestre Revueltas, each
adding to the evening’s rich musical narrative. The grand finale was a spirited Mambo, a fitting
close to a night of vibrant music and dance.
In a touching moment, the daughter of Amalia Hernández herself took a bow, receiving a
heartfelt ovation from the audience. The event was a beautiful homage to Mexican culture,
leaving the audience with lasting memories of a spectacular evening under the stars.
